Gisèle Pelicot has said she “never regretted” making her name public in the trial, in brief remarks outside the courtroom following the sentencing of her ex-husband and dozens of other men for her mass rape.

Under French law, she could have asked for the trial to be kept behind closed doors. But Pelicot said she wanted to make the horrors of her case known to give other victims of sexual violence the courage to speak up.

“I have faith now in our capacity to carve out collectively a future where women and men can live in harmony, in respect and mutual understanding,” she added.

During the trial, Pelicot said she had waived her anonymity because “it is time for society to look at this macho, patriarchal society and change the way it looks at rape.”

After this, the lengthiest sentence sought is 18 years for a 63-year-old man who visited the Pelicot home six times to allegedly rape Gisèle, according to court documents.

Prosecutors have requested a 10-year sentence most frequently and the shortest sentence of four years has been requested for the one man charged with sexual assault.

Gisèle Pelicot, the 72-year-old victim of mass rape whose trial has rocked France, waived her anonymity in an effort to help other women and force a change in society.

“They (rapists) are the ones who must be ashamed,” she said, adding that having videos shown during the trial, filmed by her husband, Dominique Pelicot, of some of her rapes, was “very difficult but necessary.”

“I’m not expressing hatred or hate, but I am determined that things change in this society,” said Gisèle Pelicot.

Protests have been organized across France to show support for her, with many women expressing admiration for her courage.

“It’s not courage. It’s determination to change things,” she said. “This is not just my battle, but that of all rape victims.”

Gisèle and Dominique Pelicot’s children have arrived at the courthouse ahead of the verdicts: Caroline, Florian and David.

David said that the family had been “destroyed” by the revelations, calling for his father and the others accused to be punished severely.

Florian also called for tough sentences, “so that victims no longer need to be afraid of speaking up.”

Dominique Pelicot has admitted to using an online chatroom called Coco to recruit men to rape his wife. Pelicot told the trial that responsibility for the rapes should be shared among the accused, saying: “I am a rapist just like all the others in this room.”

Gisèle Pelicot was drugged by him and, while unconscious, raped over 200 times by 70 men who all first met Pelicot online, prosecutors say. Police uncovered hundreds of hours of footage showing the rapes filmed by Pelicot.

Fifty other men accused of taking part in the abuse are also on trial. Some of those defendants have admitted their guilt, while others say Dominique Pelicot manipulated them into having sex with his wife, that they thought the wife had pretended to be asleep, or that it was a sex game.

Prosecutors have requested sentences ranging from four to 20 years for the 51 defendants. The maximum prison sentence of 20 years has only been requested for Dominique Pelicot himself.

While some of the defendants have pled guilty, the majority have denied the rape charges, saying they thought the husband’s consent sufficed and that they were manipulated by Pelicot into believing it was part of a consensual game between the couple.

Public prosecutor Laure Chabaud told the court in Avignon, southern France, last month that Dominique Pelicot’s sentence would be “long” but “not enough considering the serious nature of these acts.”
